Saturday of 24th Week, uneven numbered year
“With a large crowd gathering and people from every town finding their way to Him, he told this parable : ’A sower went out to sow his seed. Now as he sowed, some fell on the edge of tha path and was trampled on ; and the birds of the air ate it up.Some seed fell on rock, and when it came up, it withered away, having no moisture. Some seed fell in the middle of thorns and the thorns grew with it and choked it.”
We can very well understand how a dried up seed doesn’t come about because of the heat, but because of a ’lack of roots.’ If the word is stifled, this is because thorns have been growing feely. There would have needed alot of will-power to stop the growth! We accuse the corruption of our conscience that should have been sharper! Jesus is this Seed of wheat which fell to the ground. All justice needs to be accomplished, said Jean-Baptist.
There are many little corners hidden inside of us,which we don’t even know about ; Jesus needs to vist them and this new wheat will grow again. It is the mystery of the overflowing Love of God in his Infinite Mercy. The good earth is Mary, she caused the good Seed to germinate. Since then, God was able to shine His Love upon all our wounds, our sufferings and our miseries. His sun that enlightens all things, will come right to the end of any obstacle to Love.
“Finally, some fell into good soil and grew and produced its crop a hundrefold. Saying this, he cries, ’Anyone who has ears for listening should listen! His disciples asked him what this parable might mean, and he said, ’To you is granted to understand the secrets of the kingdom of God; for the rest it remains in parables so that ’they may look but not percieve, listen but not understand.’ ’To you is granted to understand the secrets of the kingdom of God.’”To you it has been given to know the secret." The earth in which the seed is deposited explains everything, it is not the cultivator, nor the seed, but the dispositions of our heart that brings light to this Parable . God’s Goodness for mankind is immense : He welcomes the first ones, doesn’t push away those who come along next, and he also gives a place to the third ones!
The seed is the Word of God that comes and regererates everything within us. This leads us to have a crazy hope, even if the liar wanders around like a roaring lion. Peter himself had this experience, and then found himself in a position of confiming his brothers. There are those who “welcome the Word joyfully” in daily life ; here, we recognise ourselves again in this Gospel where God’s sunshine, the rain of his Infinite Love, comes to us from right left and centre, and, one day, everything will be transformed into good earth. From a natural point of view, we have the experience of seeing the transformation of plots of land. On a level of grace, and this is Mary’s rôle, if we give her all her place, the seed will know how to turn a pebbly field into a lovely field of wheat.
“This, then, is what the parable means ; the seed is the Word of God.Those on the edge of the path are people who have heard it, and then the devil comes and carries away the word from their hearts in case they should believe and be saved. Those on the rock are people who, when they first hear it,welcome the word with joy. But these have no root; they believe for a while, and in time of trial they give up. As for the part that fell into thorns, this is people who have heard, but as they go on their way they are choked by the worries and riches ands pleasures of life and never produce any crops. As for the part in the rich soil, this is people with a noble and generous heart who have heard the word and take it to themselves and yield a harvest through their perserverance.”
So first anfd foremost we have to listen to the Word, to pay attention to it, keeping it faithfully in our memory. Full of courage, we need to despise pride and riches and be delivered from the love of goods of this earth so as to pay all our attention to the Word and make the most of what it tells us in our lives. Those who celebrate the Lord Jesus with happiness have become the Joy of God. Very often, they have gone through suffering. Now, to celebrate the Joy of God in truth when we have gone through trials is a very marvellous thing. A life marked with the hollow of anguish can give witness and is one that give thanks. The good earth that has been laboured can sing of God’s Glories.
We ask Mary, who bore the best Fruit of all fruits, for the grace to bear the fruit of a beautiful witness of God’s Love in our lives.
