3rd Sunday of Ordinary Time, year’A’ « Hearing that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee, and leaving Nazara he went and settled in Capernaum beside the lake, on the borders of Zebulun and Naphtali. This was to fulfil what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah : ‘Land of Zebulun ! Land of Naphtali ! Way of the sea beyond Jordan. Galiliee of the nations ! The people that lived in darkness Have seen a great light ; On those who lived In a country of shadow dark as death A light has dawned.’ After John the Baptist had been arrested, Jesus proclaims ‘Repent, for the Kingdom of Go dis close at hand.’ It is something urgent for us all. Jesus is walking linked with the whole of humanity. He has us notice what helps us become more human and how to get to know ourselves better. His Word is fraternel. It is a Light that enlightens the history of mankind, a path leading to the Father, a promise of Eternal Life. Jesus builds the future, He helps us resolve the world’s contradictions and to go beyond Herod’s fury. Animated by a spirit of sacrifice, Jesus is ready to sacrifice his life. A new step ahead of him ! John the Baptist was given up, he had announced Jesus who now enters onto the stage. Just as John had been surrounded by disciples, Jesus too will call his apostles ! « From then onwards Jesus began his proclamation with the message : ’Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is close at hand.’ As he was walking by the Lake of Galilee he saw two brothers, Simon, who was called Peter, and his brother Andrew ; they were making a cast into the lake with their net, for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them’ Come after me and I will make you fishers of people.’ And at once they left their nets and followed him. » Whenever Jesus calls, he gives a mission : ‘I will make of you fishermen of people.’ This call is to give a service. But the person who answers this call is the first person to benefit from ,the grace given by this call. This grace brings joy and a liberation of one’self. It is a proposition to find once again a unity within one’self and a new communion, in perfect harmony with the thoughts and feelings of others. To become a Christian, to be of Christ, means to be attatched to the person of Jesus and to follow Him as the only true Master. John the Baptist had pointed out the Lamb of God, he lets his disciples leave him in order to follow Jesus. Jesus will from now on be surrounded by his disciples, he calls two brothers, Simon, called Peter, and Andrew his brother, who threw their anchor in the sea. Those who took fish from the bottom of the sea now became capable of taking men out of the darkness so as to bring them to the Light, that is, Jesus. « Going on from there he saw another pair of brothers, James, son of Zebedee and his brother John ; they were in their boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. And at once, leaving the boat and their father, they followed him. » Two brothers are called forth twice ! This is the grace of a personal relationship given to them with Jesus which is alive and this comes from a natural fraternity. Jesus is the Light and He frees each one of us personaly. He brings about a new communion. It is the announceemnt of a new fraternity rooted in nature created by God. The Good News of the Kingdom is announced. It is a Kingdom of Peace, love and of Truth. This Word is accompanied by gestures and by tenderness. Jesus heals all those who are sick amongst the people. This is how we see the Church beginning to form. It will be enriched by new witnesses who will follow and announce the Kingdom of God. Jesus is Unique, He walks on the earth of the living, in full agreement with the One who said to him : ‘In you, I have placed all my Love.’ We too need to find our place acording to the Heart of the Father, who sends us as sisters and brothers towards his children.
Is.9,1-3 Ps.26 1 Co.1,10-17 Mt.4,12-23
We ask for the grace to participate in Jesus’ Work of Love.
